Back from the past....

So do you remember the last time you had cookies from scratch, or the last time you made your own gravey? Maybe thanksgiving?, or christmas, well I was thinking about how we eat today and how people would eat in the 40's and 50's time era. So it got me thinking about portion sizes, grocery costs, and how the heck did women back then stay so thin!! I mean they ate cakes, red meat, butter, sugar it was just madness thinking about this!

So the first thing I started to look at was portion sizes, and that was a complete shocker how much food sizes had grown! The first serving size of soda when coca-cola first came out was 8 oz, and let me ask you when was the last time you only had this much soda? One day I was cleaning out some soda bottles to recycle and found on one dr. pepper bottle that the serving size was 8oz and another one that said 12oz, thats almost double the 7oz I was talking about before! French fries serving size use to be 2oz today it's up to 8oz!! And the sad thing is even dinner plates and cups have gotten bigger!

The worse fact about all of this is we dont move around like we would if we lived back then, a stay at home mom was cleaning most of the time and picking up groceries, making multiple meals per day for the family! All of this burns calories! So women managed to stay fit, they would have long busy days and staying fit was not on their minds.

They didn't have a lot of money due to war times, plus a lot of items being rationed, sugar was hard to come by so was meat, butter, tires, shoes, and more! A military family wasn't going to make a lot of money anyway, so they used cheap cuts of meat, not very much sugar, and mainly filled up on home made bread and potatoes. when it came to the meat, it mainly being cheap cuts, they would make stew, chicken and eggs were also hard to come by, so their main meats were pork, lamb, and beef.

These people lived, with what they had, not what they chose, maybe for 1 week you could make meals like this, and move around and clean, the way I see it your killing 2 birds with 1 stone, your house is clean and you exercised! Plus with the foods you are buying you will save money, such as a bag of flour can make quite a bit of bread, and try planting some vegetables and fruit, just so it's fresh, not canned, tastes great, and no pesticides. If you dont have the space use a planter. Or go to the farmers market! Have fun!!

The Drive-Thru Menu

I know what your thinking, SALAD but thats not always the case especially when you drown it in ranch dressing. So yeah a lot of people don't find a regular garden salad very filling so, here's some ideas to get you filled up at the drive-thru and not filling out everywhere else. Most every Fast food restaurant I've been to you can order a chicken sandwich, with fried chicken, mayo, bacon, cheese,  and don't forget the fries, but that can be more calories than a Big Mac.
So i'm going to show you how to eat right on the go! When your somewhere like McDonald's, Wendy's, Dairy Queen, Sonic, ect. they have chicken or turkey sandwiches, which both are lower in calories and are a lot leaner than regular beef. Grilled chicken is ALWAYS better than fried, Mayo is not the best for any kind of sandwich do to the CALORIES so instead use mustard or avocado, DON'T use bacon, and go for light cheese (normally you don't know how many calories are in the cheese they use or what kind of cheese it is), and when it comes to sides you can take out the fries, I KNOW the FRIES, your killing me but i'm actually saving you (did you know in one kid sized fries has 230calories thats for a SMALL, for a medium 380 calories, and for a large fry a whopping 500 calories. So there are healthier choices today such as salads, apple fries, yogurt, parfaits, and more! All the options I just gave you are under 200 calories. The salad Dressing is a real trouble though you can use salsa (which is awesome in calories 5-10 calories for 1TBS YEAY!), Ranch Dressing on the other hand 70CALORIES per 1TBS thats 7-14 TBS of salsa!
Now I'm going to show you how to put this Drive-thru meal together,

  1. Grilled Chicken OR Turkey (NO BEEF)
  2. No Mayo go for Mustard or if you don't like mustard go for avocado or more veggies, or just plain.
  3. Skip the Bacon and the Cheese
  4. On the side skip the fries, go for a Yogurt, Apples, Fruit parfait, or Salad
  5. Careful on the dressing on the salad's
  6. Alway's go for water, coffee, or low calorie drinks (nobody wants to waste there calories on something that doesn't fill you up)
Enjoy!!

Let them...Eat Cake!!

Yes, most people love sweets, and of course i'm one of those many many people, so today i'm going to give you an easy boxed cake recipe that you can use and eat GUILT FREE ( Just Remember  Moderation).

1st pick out any Betty Crocker super moist cake mix
2nd pre-heat the oven according to the box
3rd get all you supplies ready such as any flavor of the 6oz. Yoplait non-fat yogurt there mainly 100-110calories each, 6 large eggs, and water.
4th seperate the egg whites from the egg yolks. Heres an instructional video to show you how to separate the egg whites from the yolks, click the link:
http://bit.ly/h0VIbv
now put all the 6 egg whites in the mixing bowl, you can either save the yolks or throw them away I don't use them in this recipe
5th put all of the yogurt into the mixing bowl
6th put the directed amount of water that is on the box in the mixing bowl
7th Now take the cake mix from the box into the mixing bowl and mix all together once the batter is smooth pour into a baking pan sprayed with cooking oil.
8th Put in pre-heated oven for desired time on the cake box.

Remember: not to much cooking spray even though it says 0Calories it's still oil! The reason it says that the cooking spray is only 0Calories is the serving size in 1/3 second spray so that is to small to have calories but if you keep spraying it adds up. So make sure you don't use a ton on just one pan, Remember: MODERATION

Cake with substitutions :177calories per piece
Cake without substitutions: 240calories per piece
                                    Difference:63calories per piece

Pudding instead of Frosting
Normally when you make cake you have the frosting right on top, instead I use JELLO instant pudding and I have no substitution for this because the only ingredient to add in is milk.

This is the calories for 1TBS of pudding that is made with different milk.
Calories For Pudding
1TBS w/ skim milk:22.16 calories
1TBS w/ 1% milk:23.5 calories
1TBS w/ 2% milk:25.0
1TBS w/ whole milk:27.1

Intro...

Okay let me just start right now I have lost 50lbs., and I love sweets and I eat them almost everyday! Obviously there is a catch to this right well there is, small alterations to making your food taste sooo much better and sooo much better for you!! So let me tell you how i did this, CALORIES! It was that simple but i'm sure some people are very unsure about counting calories, but the reason I did it was because it was my lifestyle choice, I didn't want to do all this hard work and gain it all back because I was on a diet. The only way to be sure I didn't was to make it permanent. So yes I count calories every single day and I try my best to eat healthy all the time.
I hated being overweight it was like you want to do things but you feel like your held down by weights and there is no reason to even work anymore, but thats one thing I did learn from all of this is you got to keep fighting through everything hard times or not, we have all been there. I'm sure some people are thinking well it's just weight loss, well no not exactly because we let things hold us back or we become lazy from what we've become so after this experience you cannot say it was just weight loss. I have learned so much from this and I hope I can help all of you.
